Be prepared to learn, not just watch the technician install the car seat
Know your child's weight and height
Using the car seat instruction manual and the vehicle instruction manual, try to install the car seat yourself. That way, you know what questions to ask.
Be sure to locate your car seat and your vehicle instruction manuals and bring them with you to your appointment
If possible, bring your child with you to your appointment

Ask for proof of your technician's current certification
This one on one appointment will take 20-40 minutes, depending on your car seat and your vehicle. If you need more time, the technician will take the time that is needed to make you feel more comfortable that your car seat is installed safely and correctly.
While at your appointment, the technician will be:

documenting throughout the process and asking questions.
reviewing the car seat and making sure it is the right one for your child's age, weight, height, and developmental status.
Reviewing the car seat and vehicle instruction manual to make sure both are being followed correctly
Ensure that appropriate seating position is being used
Check the car seat for recalls, visible damage, and expiration date
Guide you on installation of your car seat.
If you know that you may need to move the car seat to another location or vehicle, the technician may assist you installing your car seat using different techniques, if indicated.
Discuss the next steps for your child as they grow.
Discuss state laws and best practice recommendations for occupant safety.
Answer any questions you may have about your car seat.

A Car Seat Checkup is considered a success if you can answer "yes" to the following questions:

Did you install the car seat yourself?
Do you feel confident in installing your car seat correctly on your own?
Were all of your questions answered?
Were all of your concerns addressed?
Do you feel that you are welcomed back at any point to ask more questions if needed?
